Why does the sentence use la settimana precedente instead of la settimana scorsa?
This is the shift required for past indirect speech. If the person originally said, 'The window has been stuck since last week' (la settimana scorsa), reporting this later means 'last week' is no longer accurate relative to now. We have to change it to 'the previous week' (la settimana precedente or la settimana prima).
