Questions & Answers about La cucina è grande.
Why does the adjective grande end in -e instead of -a to match the feminine noun cucina?
Most Italian adjectives end in -o for masculine and -a for feminine. However, grande belongs to a second group of adjectives that end in -e in the singular. These adjectives use the exact same form for both masculine and feminine nouns! Why is there an accent mark on the word è?
The accent mark shows that è is the verb meaning "is". Without the accent mark, e just means "and". The accent helps you tell these two very common words apart in writing. How would I say "The kitchens are big" in the plural?
You have to change every single word to its plural form! La becomes le, cucina becomes cucine, è becomes sono (are), and grande changes its ending to an -i to become grandi. The full sentence is Le cucine sono grandi. Can cucina mean anything besides the room where you cook?
Yes! Besides meaning "kitchen", cucina also means "cuisine" or "cooking" (as in la cucina italiana for Italian cuisine). It is also the "he/she/it" form of the verb cucinare (to cook). Learn La cucina è grande and more in Italian
