Questions & Answers about Certo, posso aiutare.
Why isn't there a word for 'I' before 'posso'?
In Italian, the subject pronoun like io (I) is usually dropped because the verb itself already tells you who is acting. Posso is the 'I' form of the irregular verb potere (to be able to), so it already translates to 'I can'.
Why is 'aiutare' left in its full dictionary form ending in -are?
Because it follows posso, which is a modal verb (a helper verb like can, must, or want). In Italian, when two verbs are paired this way, only the first verb (posso) is changed to match the speaker. The second verb always stays in its infinitive (dictionary) form, like aiutare.
If a woman is speaking, should she say 'certa' instead of 'certo'?
