Why does the verb end in -i if it comes from an -are verb?
To give a polite, formal command to one person (using Lei), verbs that end in -are change their ending to -i. If you were giving this same instruction to a friend, you would use the informal command and say allega.
Why is there an h in alleghi?
The original verb is allegare, which has a hard g sound (like in "go"). Because the formal command ending changes to an -i, we have to add an h to keep that hard sound. Without the h, it would be pronounced with a soft g (like the j in "jump").
How can I tell if fotocopie is feminine or masculine?
The singular form is la fotocopia (the photocopy). Since it is a feminine noun ending in -a, its plural takes an -e. You can also tell it is feminine plural by looking at the word right before it: queste is the feminine plural form of questo (this).
Why do we say al progetto instead of just a progetto?
Just like in English, you need the word "the" here: "attach to THE project." In Italian, when the preposition a (to) is followed by the definite article il (the), they mash together into the combined word al.
