To say "the most" (the relative superlative), Italian uses a definite article (il, la, i, le) followed by più and the adjective. For the masculine noun il paesaggio, we use il più bello. For the feminine noun la cattedrale, we use la più affollata.

Doesn't più bello just mean "more beautiful"? How do we know it means "the most beautiful" here?

The secret is the definite article! On its own, più bello means "more beautiful" (comparative). But when you put the definite article right in front of it (il più bello), it transforms into "the most beautiful" (superlative).

Why does affollata end in -a?

Because it describes la cattedrale. Even though the noun cattedrale ends in -e (an ending that can be either masculine or feminine), the article la tells us it is a feminine singular word. Therefore, the adjective affollata must end in -a to match.

In English we might say "the landscape is the most beautiful one". Why isn't there a word for "one" in the Italian sentence?
