### Semantic Double Plurals

In Italian, a select group of masculine nouns ending in **-o** have two different plural forms that carry completely different meanings. These are known as semantic double plurals (*nomi sovrabbondanti*).

Typically, the regular masculine plural ending in **-i** is used for literal, individual, or distinct objects. The irregular feminine plural ending in **-a** (which requires feminine plural adjectives and articles) is used for a collective whole, a figurative concept, or parts of the human body.

### Walls: Muri vs. Mura

The noun **il muro** (wall) splits in the plural depending on what kind of walls you mean. Use the masculine **i muri** for the interior walls of a house, or individual, standalone walls. Use the feminine collective **le mura** for the massive, continuous exterior walls of a city, fortress, or castle.

### Foundations: Fondamenti vs. Fondamenta

The noun **il fondamento** behaves similarly. Use the masculine **i fondamenti** when talking about the abstract "principles" or "fundamentals" of a subject, like architecture or science. Use the feminine **le fondamenta** when referring to the literal, physical foundations of a building.

### Wires and Threads: Fili vs. Fila

For **il filo** (wire/thread), use the masculine **i fili** for literal objects like electrical wires or sewing threads. Use the feminine **le fila** when talking about figurative "strings" or "threads," such as the plot of a story or someone pulling the strings of a conspiracy.

### Body Parts: Braccia and Ossa

Many of these double plurals originally referred to body parts. The feminine **-a** ending is used for human body parts acting as a pair or a connected whole, while the masculine **-i** ending is used for mechanical parts, geographic features, or individual animal bones.
