However, in formal writing, business correspondence, or official announcements, you will often see gerund clauses that have their own independent subjects to establish a background cause or context. This structure is called the **absolute gerund** (*gerundio assoluto*).

### Independent Subjects

When constructing an absolute gerund, the word order is strict: the explicit subject must come **after** the gerund, never before it.

Here, *lo sciopero* (the strike) is the independent subject of the past gerund *avendo causato* (having caused). Meanwhile, the main sentence has a completely different subject, *noi* (we).
