Setting Formal Conditions
When planning events, writing contracts, or setting up contingencies, you often need to outline what will happen "in case" of an issue. In formal Italian, special conditional conjunctions are used for this. Because they describe hypothetical scenarios, they must always be followed by the subjunctive mood.
Qualora (Should / If)
Qualora is a highly formal alternative to se (if). It translates well to the English structure "should [something happen]."
| Should a problem arise, the committee will help you. | Qualora sorga un problema, il comitato vi aiuterà. |
| Should you not have the receipt, we cannot refund the ticket. | Qualora Lei non abbia la ricevuta, non possiamo rimborsare il biglietto. |
Nel caso in cui (In case)
Another essential phrase is nel caso in cui ("in case" or "in the event that"). Notice how the formal condition (in the subjunctive) often pairs with a future tense or conditional verb in the main clause to offer a solution or contingency.
| In case a difficulty arises, could you notify me? | Nel caso in cui sorga una difficoltà, potrebbe avvisarmi? |
| We will provide a substitute meal in case the cafeteria is closed. | Forniremo un pasto sostitutivo nel caso in cui la mensa sia chiusa. |
This structure is standard in professional environments, such as when making plans with official participants.
| In the event that the delegate is late, we will start without him. | Nel caso in cui il delegato sia in ritardo, inizieremo senza di lui. |
Nell'eventualità che (In the event that)
A similar conjunction is nell'eventualità che. It functions exactly the same way and is perfect for preparing for specific logistical scenarios, such as unexpected schedule changes or full cancellations.
| In the event that there is a change, we will notify you promptly. | Nell'eventualità che ci sia una variazione, vi avviseremo tempestivamente. |
| In the event that the concert is cancelled, we will refund the tickets. | Nell'eventualità che il concerto sia cancellato, rimborseremo i biglietti. |
Handling Cancellations
When outlining your backup plans and policies, you may need to specify the rules and consequences surrounding client cancellations (la disdetta).
| In case you send the cancellation late, we will not refund the money. | Nel caso in cui Lei mandi la disdetta in ritardo, non rimborseremo i soldi. |
| Should there be a sudden cancellation, the delegate will pay the fine. | Qualora ci sia una disdetta improvvisa, il delegato pagherà la multa. |
