Learn Icelandic: Hún veit að fundurinn er mjög mikilvægur. - She knows that the meeting is very important.

In this lesson, you are learning that að (that) connects two parts of a sentence. Because the second part is an affirmative (positive) statement, the word order stays exactly the same as a normal standalone sentence: Subject (fundurinn) followed by the Verb (er).

I thought the verb for "to know" was þekkja. Why is veit used here?

Icelandic has two common verbs for "to know". Vita (which becomes veit for "she knows") is used when you know a fact or a piece of information, like knowing that a meeting is important. You use þekkja when you know a person, a place, or are personally familiar with something.

Why does mikilvægur (important) end in -ur?

Adjectives in Icelandic have to match the gender of the noun they describe. The word for meeting (fundur) is a masculine noun. Because it is the subject of its clause, the adjective takes the standard masculine "dictionary form" ending -ur.

Where is the word for "the" in fundurinn?

Icelandic usually doesn't use a separate word for "the" like English does. Instead, it tacks an ending directly onto the noun. Fundur means "a meeting", and adding the masculine suffix -inn makes it fundurinn ("the meeting").
