Asking "Why" and Answering with "Because"
To ask for a reason in Icelandic, use the question phrase af hverju (why).
| Why is the bus coming late? | Af hverju kemur strætóinn seint? |
To answer or explain a reason, use the subordinating conjunction af því að (because). It links two complete thoughts together. Notice that the word order after af því að stays simple: you just continue with the standard subject-verb order.
| The bus is coming late because it is snowing. | Strætóinn kemur seint af því að það snjóar. |
| I am going home because I am tired. | Ég fer heim af því að ég er þreyttur. |
Expressing Facts with "að"
When you want to express a fact, a realization, or a thought, use the conjunction að (that). It is especially common after verbs involving the mind, such as vita (to know) and muna (to remember).
Just like with af því að, the word order in the clause following að remains in the standard subject-verb order.
| I know that the office is open today. | Ég veit að skrifstofan er opin í dag. |
| Do you remember that the meeting is today? | Manst þú að fundurinn er í dag? |
| She knows that the meeting is very important. | Hún veit að fundurinn er mjög mikilvægur. |
