Questions & Answers about Ert þú kennari?
Why does the sentence start with Ert instead of þú?
In Icelandic, to turn a statement into a yes/no question, you swap the subject (þú) and the verb (ert). So while 'You are' is Þú ert, 'Are you?' becomes Ert þú?
Why is it ert and not er?
The verb vera (to be) changes depending on the pronoun. With ég (I), hann (he), hún (she), and það (it), you use er, but specifically with þú (you), it changes to ert.
Why is there no word for 'a' in front of kennari?
Icelandic does not have an indefinite article (a separate word for 'a' or 'an'). The word kennari on its own means 'a teacher' or 'teacher' depending on the English translation.
Is þú used for any 'you'?
þú is the singular word for 'you'. You only use it when talking to exactly one person. If you were asking a group of people if they are teachers, you would use a different pronoun entirely.
