Questions & Answers about Er hann góður spilari?
How is the noun spilari formed from a verb?
It comes from the verb spila (to play). By dropping the infinitive ending -a and adding the suffix -ari, we create a masculine noun for the person doing the action. It works exactly like adding "-er" in English to turn "play" into "player".
Are all nouns ending in -ari masculine?
Yes! When -ari is used as a suffix to create an agent noun (a word for a person who does a specific action), the resulting noun is always masculine. Because spilari is masculine, the adjective describing him must be in the masculine nominative form, which is why we see góður here.
How does the word spilari change in other grammatical cases?
Nouns ending in -ari follow the weak masculine declension pattern. In the singular, they change their ending from -i to -a in the accusative, dative, and genitive cases. For example, "I see a player" would be "Ég sé spilara". In our sentence, it stays spilari because it is connected to the verb "to be", which always takes the nominative case.
Would I use spilari to talk about a football player?
Usually not. The noun spilari is mostly used for people playing games (like cards, board games, or video games) or musical instruments. If you are talking about physical sports, Icelanders typically use the word leikmaður (athlete or team player).
