Questions & Answers about Það er stór rispa að framan.
Why do we use að framan here instead of fyrir framan?
The adverb að framan means located "on the front side" or "at the front" of something. You use it when describing a part of the object itself, like a scratch on a car's bumper. On the other hand, fyrir framan means "in front of" and is a preposition that requires an outside object, like saying a dog is sitting in front of the car.
Does the að in að framan mean there is motion towards the front?
Actually, it is the opposite! Historically, the að prefix in these directional adverbs implies a perspective looking from a point. So að framan literally leans toward "viewed from the front." In everyday modern Icelandic, it is simply the standard way to say that a feature is located "at the front" of an object.
Why is it stór rispa and not stórt rispa?
The word rispa (scratch) is a feminine noun. Because it is the subject of the sentence, the adjective must match it in the feminine singular nominative form, which is stór. If the noun were neuter, like borð (table), you would use the neuter form stórt.
Why do we start with Það er instead of just saying the scratch is at the front?
Það er acts as a dummy subject here, translating exactly to "There is" in English. It is the most natural way in Icelandic to introduce that a new, unspecified thing (a big scratch) exists or is present in a certain location.
