Perspective spatial adverbs (að ofan, að framan)

Inspecting the Damage

When filing an insurance claim for your vehicle, the first step is to assess the damage.

We need to assess the damage to the car.
Við þurfum að meta tjónið á bílnum.

Spatial Perspective with "að"

In English, we use various prepositions to describe which side of an object we are looking at (like "on the inside," "at the front," or "underneath"). Icelandic handles this uniformly with a set of spatial adverbs starting with .

While the preposition often indicates motion towards something, in these adverbs it establishes a fixed spatial perspective: describing a position on a specific side or looking at it from that angle.

Outside and Inside

To talk about the exterior and interior of the car, we use að utan (on or from the outside) and að innan (on or from the inside).

The professional inspects the damage from the outside.
Fagmaðurinn skoðar tjónið að utan.
The car is clean on the outside but dirty on the inside.
Bíllinn er hreinn að utan en skítugur að innan.

Front and Back

If you find a scratch (rispan) or a dent (beyglan), you will need to specify its location. Use að framan for damage at the front, and að aftan for damage at the back.

There is a big scratch at the front.
Það er stór rispa að framan.
Do you see the dent at the back?
Sérð þú beygluna að aftan?

Top and Bottom

Finally, a thorough inspection requires checking the roof and the undercarriage. For these perspectives, use að ofan (on top / from above) and að neðan (underneath / from below).

Is the car damaged on top?
Er bíllinn skemmdur að ofan?
No, it is neither damaged on top nor underneath.
Nei, hann er hvorki skemmdur að ofan né að neðan.
