Ergonomics and Wellness
When attending a seminar on ergonomics, you will talk a lot about posture, physical wellness, and circulation.
| Ergonomics helps us by fixing bad posture. | Vinnuvistfræðin hjálpar okkur með því að laga slæma líkamsstöðu. |
| Good posture improves the blood circulation. | Góð líkamsstaða bætir blóðrásina. |
Vowel Shifts in Plurals (I-Umlaut)
Just as English has irregular plurals where the middle vowel changes (like "foot" to "feet" or "man" to "men"), Icelandic has a very similar feature. For several high-frequency root nouns, making the word plural triggers a vowel change in the root of the word. This historical shift is known as an i-umlaut.
When you add the definite article to these new plurals, masculine words will typically add -nir and feminine words will add -nar.
Let us look at two common masculine nouns:
- fótur (foot) shifts its ó to æ, becoming fætur (feet). With the definite article, it becomes fæturnir.
- maður (man/person) shifts its a to e, becoming menn (men/people). With the definite article, it becomes mennirnir.
| The feet should be straight on the floor. | Fæturnir eiga að vera beinir á gólfinu. |
| Finally the men can work without getting pain. | Loksins geta mennirnir unnið án þess að fá sársauka. |
Feminine Noun Shifts
Feminine nouns undergo similar vowel shifts.
- hönd (hand) shifts its ö to e, becoming hendur (hands). The definite form is hendurnar.
- bók (book) shifts its ó to æ, becoming bækur (books). The definite form is bækurnar.
| Ergonomics teaches us to stretch the hands often. | Vinnuvistfræðin kennir okkur að teygja hendurnar oft. |
| The rest helps if the books are too heavy. | Hvíldin hjálpar ef bækurnar eru of þungar. |
Relieving Stiff Muscles
To put these new plurals into action, you will need some practical verbs. In a physical wellness context, you will often need to adjust your equipment and stretch your limbs to prevent stiffness and pain.
Notice how these irregular plurals fit seamlessly into everyday instructions alongside verbs like stilla (to adjust) and teygja (to stretch).
| First I am going to adjust the chair and then stretch the feet. | Fyrst ætla ég að stilla stólinn og svo teygja fæturna. |
