Questions & Answers about Я їм яблуко під час прогулянки.
Why is the verb їм used here?
The verb їм is the 1st person singular present tense of їсти (“to eat”). In Ukrainian the simple present tense covers both “I eat” (habitual) and “I am eating” (ongoing), so їм works for “I’m eating an apple.”
Why is the noun яблуко in that form?
Яблуко is a neuter noun ending in –о. Here it’s the direct object of їм, so it takes the accusative case. For neuter nouns in –о the nominative and accusative singular forms are identical, hence яблуко remains unchanged.
Why do we say під час прогулянки instead of a different case or preposition?
The preposition під час means “during” or “while.” It always requires the following noun to be in the genitive case. So прогулянка (“a walk”) becomes прогулянки.
Can I use a shorter form like “while walking” without під час?
Yes. You can use the present adverbial participle (деєприслівник) гуляючи. For example:
Гуляючи, я їм яблуко.
This means exactly the same but is more concise.
Could I say Поки я гуляю, я їм яблуко instead?
