Why is купив used here, and what does it tell me about the speaker?
Купив is the past tense masculine singular form of the verb купити (to buy).
So Я купив means I bought, said by a male speaker.
If the speaker were female, it would be:
Я купила груші й сливи.
This is a very common feature of Ukrainian past tense: it agrees with the speaker’s gender in the singular.
Why are груші and сливи in these forms?
They are in the accusative plural, because they are the direct objects of купив: they are the things that were bought.
However, for inanimate plural nouns, the accusative plural is usually the same as the nominative plural. So:
- груші = pears
- сливи = plums
In this sentence, those same forms are used after the verb:
- Я купив груші й сливи.
So even though they are objects, their forms look just like the plural dictionary-style subject forms.
