Questions & Answers about Ich lese diese Informationen oft im Internet.

Why is the adverb oft placed before im Internet, and not after the direct object?

German follows a rough Time–Manner–Place (TMP) order in the “middle field” (after the verb).

  • oft expresses time/frequency
  • diese Informationen is the direct object (accusative) – this can intervene
  • im Internet expresses place

Putting oft before im Internet respects “time” (oft) → “place” (im Internet). You could also say
Ich lese oft diese Informationen im Internet,
but you would not normally put the place adverb before the time adverb.

Why do we say diese Informationen instead of dieser Informationen?
  • Informationen is plural (Singular: die Information, Plural: die Informationen).
  • Demonstrative pronouns agree in number and case: Plural in accusative uses diese (nominative plural is also diese, accusative plural is diese).
  • dieser would be masculine nominative or feminine genitive singular; it does not match plural accusative.
Why is the phrase im Internet used instead of in dem Internet or ins Internet?
  • Internet is neuter: das Internet.
  • The preposition in with a location (no motion) takes the dative case → in dem Internet.
  • German frequently contracts in dem to im.
  • ins Internet (in + das) would be movement “into the Internet,” used for verbs of motion (e.g. “Ich springe ins Wasser”).
Why is the verb form lese used here, even though it talks about a habitual action?

German uses the simple present tense (Präsens) for both ongoing and habitual actions.

  • Ich lese ... oft ... can mean “I am reading ... often ...” or “I often read ...” depending on context.
  • There is no separate “present perfect” or “simple past” requirement for habitual actions.
Why is Internet capitalized?
All German nouns are capitalized. Internet is a noun, so it must always start with a capital letter.
Could you leave out diese and say Ich lese Informationen oft im Internet?

Yes.

  • Ich lese Informationen oft im Internet. is grammatically correct and means “I read information often on the Internet.”
  • Adding diese (“these”) makes it definite: “I often read these specific pieces of information on the Internet.”
  • Omitting diese makes it more general.
Is Informationen countable or uncountable in German?
  • Information (sg.) is treated as a countable noun in German: you can have eine Information, zwei Informationen.
  • In everyday usage, Informationen can also function like an uncountable mass noun (“some information”), but grammatically it has a plural form and takes plural articles/adjectives.
