Questions & Answers about Utírám prach ze stolu.
Utírám is the 1st person singular present form of the imperfective verb utírat.
That means it usually expresses:
- an action happening right now: I am wiping
- or a habitual/repeated action: I wipe / I dust
By contrast, utřu is from the perfective verb utřít, which focuses on the action as completed. Czech often uses imperfective verbs for ongoing actions and perfective verbs for completed ones.
So:
- Utírám prach ze stolu. = I’m wiping dust off the table / I’m dusting the table.
- Utřu prach ze stolu. = I’ll wipe the dust off the table / I’ll remove it completely.
Czech often leaves out subject pronouns because the verb ending already shows who the subject is.
Here, -ám in utírám tells you the subject is I.
So:
- Utírám prach ze stolu. = I’m wiping dust off the table.
- Já utírám prach ze stolu. also means the same thing, but já adds emphasis, like I am the one wiping the dust off the table.
English usually needs the pronoun; Czech often does not.
