Why is it od sobe and not za sobu?
Od with the genitive (od sobe) expresses belonging or a close relationship: the key of the room. Za with the accusative (za sobu) expresses purpose: a key intended for a room. For physical keys to locks, od is the default and most natural; za can be heard, but it leans toward purpose. Both are possible, but ključ od sobe is the safest everyday choice.
Why does soba change to sobe?
Because od requires the genitive case. Soba (room) is a feminine -a noun; its genitive singular ends in -e → sobe. So od sobe = of the room.
What case is stolu, and why does it end in -u?
It’s the locative singular of stol (table). With static location, na governs the locative, and many masculine nouns take -u in the locative: na stolu = on the table. Note: the dative and locative singular look the same in form (stolu).
When would it be na stol instead of na stolu?
Use na + accusative for motion toward a surface: Stavi ključ na stol = Put the key onto the table. Use na + locative for location: Ključ je na stolu = The key is on the table.
Can I say ključ sobe without od?
Yes. Ključ sobe (bare genitive) is correct and a bit more concise/neutral or formal. Ključ od sobe is very common in everyday speech. Both are fine; choose based on style.
Is sobni ključ also correct?
Yes. Sobni ključ is an adjectival compound meaning room key. It sounds compact and is common in signs, hotels, and formal phrasing: Sobni ključ je na stolu.
Why is je in the middle?
Je (is) is a clitic and normally sits in the second position in the clause. In Ključ od sobe je na stolu, the first chunk is Ključ od sobe, so je comes right after it. You won’t place je at the end like in English.
Can I change the word order?
Yes. Word order is flexible for emphasis:
- Ključ od sobe je na stolu. (neutral)
- Na stolu je ključ od sobe. (emphasizes location) Be careful: Ključ je na stolu od sobe would be parsed as on the room’s table, which is odd; you’d usually say na stolu u sobi (on the table in the room) for that idea.
There are no articles—how do I know if it means the key or a key?
Croatian has no articles. Definiteness comes from context, word order, or demonstratives. If you need to specify, use taj/ta/to (that) or ovaj/ova/ovo (this): Taj ključ od sobe je na stolu = That room key is on the table.
How do I pronounce ključ?
- lj is a single sound, like the palatalized L in English million (the li in million): roughly “kly-”.
- u is like oo in food.
- č is a hard ch as in choose. Together: approximately “klyooch.”
Do I have to write the diacritics like č?
Yes. They’re part of the spelling and can change meaning and pronunciation. Ključ is correct; kljuc is wrong.
What else can od mean?
Besides of, od also means from in many contexts: daleko od kuće (far from home), umoran od posla (tired from work), počeo je od nule (he started from zero). It always takes the genitive.
Is stol the same as sto?
In standard Croatian, stol = table, while sto = one hundred. In Serbian (and some varieties), sto can mean table. So in Croatian, stick with stol for table.
What would the plural look like?
Subject plural: Ključevi od sobe su na stolu. (ključevi = keys; verb becomes su for they are). Note that sobe can also be nominative plural rooms, but after od it’s clearly genitive singular.
Can I use u sobi instead of od sobe?
No; they mean different things. Od sobe = of the room (belongs to the room). U sobi = in the room (location). Ključ u sobi je na stolu means the key that is in the room is on the table.
Could I say u stolu?
Only if you literally mean inside the table (e.g., in a drawer): Ključ je u stolu. For on top of the table, use na stolu.
Is jest ever used instead of je?
Jest exists and can add emphasis or a formal flavor: Ključ od sobe jest na stolu (indeed is on the table). In everyday speech, je is standard.
How do I negate the sentence?
Use nije (not is): Ključ od sobe nije na stolu. Here ne + je contracts to nije.
