Questions & Answers about Ich bin den Kollegen und das ständige Jammern leid.
Why are den Kollegen and das ständige Jammern in the accusative case here?
The phrase etwas leid sein (to be sick of something) is one of a few specific expressions where an adjective requires the accusative case. The things you are sick of just sit directly in the accusative, without needing a preposition.
Wait, isn't Kollegen plural? The English translation says "the colleague".
It is singular here! The noun der Kollege belongs to a group of masculine nouns known as n-declension (or weak) nouns. These nouns take an -(e)n ending in every case except the nominative singular. Since it is the accusative object here, it becomes den Kollegen.
Why is Jammern capitalized, and how do we know it is a neuter noun?
Jammern is a nominalized verb, which means a verb turned into a noun (meaning "whining" or "complaining"). In German, you can turn any infinitive verb into a noun simply by capitalizing it, and these are always neuter, which is why it uses das.
Why does leid go at the very end of the sentence?
In the construction etwas leid sein, the adjective leid forms a multi-word predicate with the verb sein. Just like a separable prefix or a past participle, the second part of this verb phrase (leid) gets pushed to the very end of the main clause.
