Questions & Answers about Aufgrund des Publikums war der Sicherheitsabstand sehr wichtig.
Why do we say des Publikums instead of dem Publikum after aufgrund?
The preposition aufgrund (due to) requires the genitive case. Since das Publikum (the audience) is a neuter noun, its genitive article is des, and we add an -s to the end of the noun, resulting in des Publikums.
Why does the verb war come before the subject der Sicherheitsabstand?
This is the standard V2 (verb-second) rule in action. The entire prepositional phrase Aufgrund des Publikums occupies the first position in the sentence. The conjugated verb war must take the second position, which pushes the subject der Sicherheitsabstand into the third position.
Is there a difference between using aufgrund and wegen here?
Both mean "due to" or "because of" and both take the genitive case in standard German (wegen des Publikums). However, aufgrund sounds slightly more formal and is very common in news or official writing. In casual spoken German, you will often hear wegen paired with the dative case (wegen dem Publikum), but aufgrund strictly sticks to the genitive.
This lesson focuses on the past Konjunktiv II passive with modal verbs. How would you change this sentence to say: "Due to the audience, the safety distance should have been kept"?
You would say: Aufgrund des Publikums hätte der Sicherheitsabstand eingehalten werden müssen. This showcases the advanced structure: hätte (in position 2) + subject + past participle (eingehalten) + werden + modal infinitive (müssen) at the very end of the clause.
