Questions & Answers about Du musst nicht perfekt aussehen, sondern einfach Zuversicht ausstrahlen.
Why is sondern used here instead of aber, since both translate to "but"?
Sondern is specifically used to mean "but rather" after a negative statement (here, nicht perfekt aussehen). It completely replaces the negative idea with a positive one. You use aber to add a contrast or limitation, but when you want to say "not X, but rather Y," you must always use sondern.
How does the word order work after sondern? Why is ausstrahlen at the very end?
Sondern is a coordinating conjunction (like und or oder), meaning it connects two equal parts of a sentence without changing the word order. Here, it links two infinitive phrases that both depend on the modal verb musst. The underlying structure is "Du musst nicht perfekt aussehen, sondern [du musst] einfach Zuversicht ausstrahlen." Both infinitives naturally go at the end of their respective clauses.
What role does einfach play in this sentence?
While einfach can mean the adjective "simple," here it acts as a particle meaning "simply" or "just." It emphasizes that radiating confidence is the only thing required, making the advice feel more approachable. It works exactly like the English "just" in "just radiate confidence."
Could I use Selbstbewusstsein instead of Zuversicht for "confidence"?
You could, but it changes the nuance slightly. Selbstbewusstsein literally means "self-confidence" or "self-assurance." Zuversicht carries a stronger sense of "optimism" or "faith that things will turn out well." Radiating Zuversicht means you are projecting a positive, hopeful outlook, rather than just pride in your own abilities.
