Questions & Answers about Ich brauche Hilfe, und zwar sofort.
What exactly does the phrase und zwar mean here?
und zwar is a very common fixed phrase used to add specific details or emphasis to what you just said. Depending on the sentence, it translates to "namely", "in fact", or "and ... at that". In this sentence, it strongly emphasizes how urgently the help is needed.
Why is there a comma before und zwar? Doesn't und usually connect things without a comma?
Normally, und doesn't take a comma when connecting words or main clauses. However, und zwar acts as an explanatory add-on. Because it introduces a clarification or emphasis added to the end of a thought, German punctuation rules require a comma before it.
Could I just say Ich brauche sofort Hilfe instead?
Yes, you could, and it would be perfectly correct grammar. However, tagging , und zwar sofort onto the end of the sentence adds a lot more drama and urgency. It sounds more like "I need help, and I mean right now!"
Can I use und zwar to add details to other types of words, not just time words like sofort?
Absolutely! It is very often used to specify nouns. For example: Ich habe mir ein Auto gekauft, und zwar einen VW (I bought a car, namely a VW). It is incredibly versatile for whenever you want to say "...and specifically, [this]".
