Saying it again, more precisely
| das heißt | that is, i.e. | Er kommt spät, *das heißt gegen acht.* |
| und zwar | namely, to be precise | Ich brauche Hilfe, *und zwar sofort.* |
und zwar always ADDS a precision to what you just said; it never starts a sentence. Do not confuse it with the zwar ... aber of L187 — that one concedes a point, this one sharpens it.
| I need help, and right away at that. | Ich brauche Hilfe, und zwar sofort. |
Hedging how generally you mean it
| im Allgemeinen | in general | Im Allgemeinen ist das Wetter hier gut. |
| in der Regel | as a rule, usually | In der Regel kommt der Bus pünktlich. |
| unter Umständen | possibly, in some circumstances | Das dauert *unter Umständen länger.* |
unter Umständen is the careful one — it flags that what follows may or may not happen, and it is what a German official says instead of promising you anything.
| That may possibly take longer. | Das dauert unter Umständen länger. |
Contrasting and comparing
Im Gegenteil, ich finde das sehr gut. — On the contrary, I think it is very good. Im Vergleich zu gestern ist es heute warm. — Compared to yesterday it is warm today. In Bezug auf den Preis habe ich eine Frage. — With regard to the price I have a question.
im Gegenteil contradicts what was just said and stands alone at the front. im Vergleich zu and in Bezug auf are both multi-word prepositions — the first takes the dative, the second the accusative.
| On the contrary, I think that is very good. | Im Gegenteil, ich finde das sehr gut. |
Ending, listing, and the sudden turn
zum Schluss closes a text or a talk. und so weiter trails a list off (written usw.). And auf einmal is not once — it means all of a sudden.
Auf einmal war es ganz dunkel. — All of a sudden it was completely dark.
| All of a sudden it was completely dark. | Auf einmal war es ganz dunkel. |
