In English, we say "in the sky", but German treats the sky like a surface or background. Therefore, it uses the preposition an (on/at) with the dative masculine article dem, contracting to am. If you say im Himmel, it actually means "in heaven"!

Why use "sind" here instead of "es gibt" for "there are"?

When you start a sentence with a specific location like Am Himmel, it is very common and natural to just use the verb sein (to be). You could also say Am Himmel gibt es viele Wolken, which is perfectly fine, but simply using sind is often preferred for describing what is physically present at a location.

Why does the subject "viele Wolken" come after the verb?

This is due to the strict "verb second" rule in German main clauses. Since the location phrase Am Himmel takes the first position, the verb sind must take the second position. This pushes the subject viele Wolken into the third position, right after the verb.

Why do we use "viele" here instead of "viel"?

Wolken (clouds) are countable, so you must use the plural form viele (many). You only use the uninflected viel (much) for uncountable things, like viel Wasser (much water) or viel Zeit (a lot of time).
