Questions & Answers about Es soll in diesem Haus wirklich spuken.
Why does soll mean "is said to" in this sentence instead of "should"?
This is the subjective use of the modal verb sollen. Instead of expressing an obligation like "should", it is used to report a rumor or hearsay. In this context, Es soll... spuken means "People say it is haunted" or "It is said to be haunted".
Why do we use es as the subject instead of saying Dieses Haus soll spuken?
The verb spuken (to be haunted) is typically used as an impersonal verb in German. Just like we say es regnet (it is raining), Germans say es spukt (it is haunted / there are ghosts). The house itself isn't the grammatical subject; it is just the location where the haunting happens.
Why is it in diesem Haus with an -em ending?
The preposition in is a two-way preposition. Because the haunting is happening at a fixed location without any movement towards a new destination, in triggers the dative case here. Haus is a neuter noun, so the demonstrative article changes to the dative form diesem.
Why is spuken at the very end of the sentence?
This is the standard German word order for sentences with modal verbs. The conjugated modal verb soll takes the second position in the sentence, pushing the main action verb in its infinitive form (spuken) all the way to the end.
