Questions & Answers about Niemand kennt den Ort, woher der Begriff kommt.
Why does this sentence use woher instead of just wo?
In English, we often end sentences with a preposition, like "where the term comes from." German handles this by building the direction right into the relative pronoun. Because the verb kommt expresses an origin (coming from somewhere), you must use woher (from where). You use wo only for static locations.
Could I split woher into two words here?
Yes! In spoken German, speakers frequently split directional words like woher and wohin. Saying ...wo der Begriff herkommt is very common and sounds natural, though keeping woher together at the start of the clause is the standard style for writing.
Why is it den Ort instead of der Ort?
Ort (place) is a masculine noun. In this sentence, nobody (the subject) knows the place (the direct object). Because it is the direct object receiving the action of the verb kennt, it must take the accusative case, changing der to den.
Why is kommt at the very end of the sentence?
The phrase woher der Begriff kommt is a relative clause giving us more information about den Ort. Like all subordinate clauses in German, it requires the conjugated verb (kommt) to be placed at the very end.
