Questions & Answers about Die Landschaft, wo der Vulkan steht, ist sehr beeindruckend.
Why do we use wo here instead of a regular relative pronoun like in der?
In German, wo (where) acts as an indefinite relative pronoun when referring to a place, region, or country. While you could grammatically say in der (in which) because Landschaft is feminine, using wo is very natural and common, just like saying 'where' instead of 'in which' in English.
Why is the verb steht right before the second comma?
The phrase wo der Vulkan steht is a relative clause giving us more information about the landscape. Relative clauses are dependent clauses, which means they must push their conjugated verb (steht) all the way to the end of that specific clause.
Why are there commas before wo and after steht?
German comma rules are very strict about separating clauses. Because the relative clause interrupts the main sentence (Die Landschaft ist sehr beeindruckend), it must be fenced in with commas on both sides.
How is the word beeindruckend formed?
It comes from the verb beeindrucken (to impress). By adding a -d to the end of a German verb's infinitive form, you create a present participle, which is similar to adding '-ing' in English. Here, it is simply acting as an adjective to describe the landscape.
