Questions & Answers about Le problème était que le voleur avait déjà disparu.

Why do we use the plus-que-parfait (avait disparu) here instead of the passé composé (a disparu)?

The plus-que-parfait is used to show that an action was fully completed before another point or action in the past. Here, the thief's disappearance happened before the past situation established by était (was). It works exactly like 'had disappeared' in English.

Why is the word déjà placed right in the middle of the verb avait disparu?

In compound tenses like the plus-que-parfait or passé composé, short and common adverbs like déjà (already), bien (well), and toujours (always) are placed directly between the auxiliary verb (avait) and the past participle (disparu).

Why does disparu use avait instead of était? Doesn't it describe a change of state or location?

That is a great question! While many verbs of motion and state change (like arriving, leaving, or dying) take être in compound tenses, the verb disparaître (to disappear) is an exception. It always takes avoir as its helping verb.

Why is the first verb était in the imparfait instead of the passé composé?

We use the imparfait (était) because it describes an ongoing state or sets a scene in the past ('the problem was...'). The passé composé is used for specific, completed events, which doesn't fit when simply describing a past situation.
