En décembre, nous allons à la montagne.

From Lesson 42:Months of the year·French

Questions & Answers about En décembre, nous allons à la montagne.

Why do we use en before décembre?
In French, the preposition en is almost always used with months and years to mean 'in'. So, 'in December' is simply en décembre.
Why isn't the word décembre capitalized?
Unlike in English, months and days of the week are not capitalized in French unless they are the very first word of a sentence.
What verb does allons come from?
It is the nous (we) form of the irregular verb aller, which means 'to go'. In French, nous allons can mean either 'we go' or 'we are going'.
Why does the sentence use à la instead of au?
The word montagne is feminine, so it uses the article la. The preposition à (to) sits next to it as à la. You only use au when à combines with the masculine article le.
The English translation says 'mountains', so why is montagne singular here?
When talking about going to the mountains as a general destination (like for a holiday or skiing), French uses the singular phrase à la montagne. If you used the plural, it would sound like you are traveling to visit specific, individual mountain peaks.
