Le silence est effrayant sans personne à côté de moi.

Questions & Answers about Le silence est effrayant sans personne à côté de moi.

Where is the ne in this sentence? I thought "anyone" or "nobody" was ne... personne.
You normally need ne before the verb to make a negative sentence with personne. However, the preposition sans (without) already carries a negative meaning. When you use personne directly after sans, you drop the ne. This makes sans personne mean "without anyone."
Doesn't personne just mean "person"?
It can! As a regular noun, une personne means "a person" and is always feminine. But as a negative pronoun, it means "nobody" or "anyone". Here, combined with sans, it translates perfectly to "anyone".
Why do we use moi at the end instead of me?
When a pronoun comes after a preposition like de (or a phrase ending in de, like à côté de meaning "next to"), you must use a stress pronoun. The stress pronoun for "me" is moi. You cannot say à côté de me.
Why does effrayant end in a "t" instead of "te" here?
Effrayant (scary) is an adjective describing le silence. Since silence is a masculine noun in French, the adjective stays in its masculine form. If it were describing a feminine noun, you would add an "e" to make it effrayante.
