Why is it cet hôpital instead of ce hôpital?
Even though hôpital is a masculine word, it starts with a silent 'h'. To make pronunciation smoother, French uses cet instead of ce before masculine nouns that begin with a vowel sound or a silent 'h'. This allows you to link the 't' sound to the noun.
Why does the word for "this" change to cette for the pharmacy?
Pharmacie is a feminine noun. In French, you must use the feminine form of "this", which is cette, for feminine nouns. So we use cet for the masculine hospital, and cette for the feminine pharmacy.
Why is there an 's' at the end of modernes?
