Questions & Answers about Sopeutuvainen työntekijä on valmis muuttumaan.
How is sopeutuvainen formed, and what nuance does the -vainen suffix add?
It comes from the verb sopeutua (to adapt or adjust oneself). By adding the suffix -vainen to the verb stem sopeutu-, we get an adjective describing someone who has a tendency or habit of adapting. This suffix is highly productive for creating adjectives that describe personality traits or characteristics derived from actions.
Why do we use muuttumaan instead of the basic first infinitive muuttua?
The adjective valmis (ready) acts as a rektion (government) trigger that requires the third infinitive illative form (-maan/-mään). When you are "ready to do" something in Finnish, grammatically you are "ready into doing" it.
Could I use muuttamaan instead of muuttumaan here?
Not in this context, because they have different meanings. Muuttaa is transitive (to change something else, or to move house), while muuttua is intransitive (to change oneself). Because the adaptable employee is ready to undergo change themselves, you must use the intransitive muuttumaan.
I know työntekijä means employee, but what is the literal breakdown of the word?
