Adjectives of Tendency (-vainen / -väinen)
In Finnish, you can turn verbs into adjectives that describe a person's tendency, habit, or natural inclination by adding the suffix -vainen or -väinen to the verb stem (following vowel harmony).
- huomata (to notice) → huomaavainen (considerate, observant)
- suvaita (to tolerate) → suvaitsevainen (tolerant)
- vaatia (to demand) → vaativainen (demanding)
- säästää (to save) → säästäväinen (frugal)
- unohtaa (to forget) → unohtavainen (forgetful)
| personality | persoonallisuus |
| Her personality is considerate and tolerant. | Hänen persoonallisuutensa on huomaavainen ja suvaitsevainen. |
| A frugal student would invest money. | Säästäväinen opiskelija sijoittaisi rahaa. |
| The client is forgetful, which is a problem. | Asiakas on unohtavainen, mikä on ongelma. |
Expressing Inclination
When using adjectives like taipuvainen (inclined) or valmis (ready) to say someone is prone to do something, the following verb takes the third infinitive illative form (-maan / -mään).
| A demanding person is inclined to stress. | Vaativainen ihminen on taipuvainen stressaamaan. |
| An adaptable employee is ready to change. | Sopeutuvainen työntekijä on valmis muuttumaan. |
Plural Agreement
Like all Finnish adjectives, these words must agree in number and case with the noun they describe.
- When modifying a plural noun, the ending changes to -vaiset or -väiset.
- When describing a plural subject after the verb olla (to be), the adjective acts as a complement and takes the plural partitive case, ending in -vaisia or -väisiä.
| Frugal people are rarely forgetful. | Säästäväiset ihmiset ovat harvoin unohtavaisia. |
| We are adaptable, but inclined to worry. | Olemme sopeutuvaisia, mutta taipuvaisia murehtimaan. |
| Adaptable employees manage well in the workplace. | Sopeutuvaiset työntekijät pärjäävät työpaikalla. |
