Questions & Answers about Maahanmuuttaja on tottunut siihen, että prosessi vie aikaa.
Why is siihen included before the että clause?
The verb tottua (to get used to) requires its target to be in the illative case, which answers 'to what?'. Because you cannot attach a case ending directly to an että clause, you must use a pronoun bridge. The pronoun se takes the illative case to become siihen (to it), satisfying the verb's requirement, and then points forward to the että clause.
Is on tottunut the perfect tense, or something else?
It looks exactly like the perfect tense of tottua (to get used to) and can be translated as 'has gotten used to'. However, the past participle tottunut is also commonly used as an adjective alongside the verb olla (to be) to mean 'is used to'. Both interpretations fit naturally here.
Why is aikaa in the partitive case in the phrase vie aikaa?
The phrase viedä aikaa means 'to take time'. Time is an uncountable concept here (an unspecified amount of time, not one specific hour or day), so it takes the partitive case. The verb viedä literally means 'to take' or 'to carry away', and using it with aikaa is the standard way to express that a process is time-consuming.
