Questions & Answers about Minun ei tarvitse tietää, että tämän teoksen julkaisi suuri kustantamo.
The English translation uses the passive "was published by", but the Finnish sentence doesn't use a passive verb. Why?
Finnish often uses Object-Verb-Subject (OVS) word order to achieve the same focus as the English passive voice. By putting the object tämän teoksen first, it becomes the topic of the clause, just like "this work" is the topic in the English translation. The verb julkaisi remains in the active voice, and the subject suuri kustantamo comes at the end.
Why is the fronted object tämän teoksen in the genitive case?
Even though it's placed at the beginning of the clause where a subject usually goes, it is still the grammatical object of the verb julkaisi. Because the action is complete (the publishing happened) and applies to the whole work, it takes the genitive-looking accusative case.
Why is the very first word minun in the genitive case instead of the basic minä (I)?
This is a reminder of the necessive construction. Verbs expressing necessity or obligation, like tarvita (to need) and täytyä (must), require their subject to be in the genitive case.
Why is the negative form ei tarvitse used instead of en tarvitse since the logical subject is "I"?
In necessive constructions, the verb is frozen in the third-person singular form. Because the structure is literally closer to "it is not necessary for me", the negative verb is always ei, regardless of who the actual subject is.
