Questions & Answers about Emme tee uutta suunnitelmaa, jos tämä ratkaisu toimii.
Why is there a comma before jos?
In Finnish, you must always put a comma between a main clause (Emme tee uutta suunnitelmaa) and a subordinate clause starting with jos (if). English doesn't always use a comma here, but Finnish punctuation rules strictly require it.
The English translation says "we will not make", but aren't the verbs in the present tense?
Yes, both tee and toimii are in the present tense. Finnish does not have a separate future tense. We simply use the present tense for future events, and the context (like a condition that might happen) makes it clear we are talking about the future.
Why is the object uutta suunnitelmaa in the partitive case?
Because the sentence is negative (emme tee). A major rule in Finnish is that the object of a negative sentence must always be in the partitive case. If the sentence were positive, it would be Teemme uuden suunnitelman.
Why is the verb just tee instead of teemme (we make)?
In a negative sentence, the negative verb (emme) already shows who is doing the action (we). The main verb drops its personal ending and uses its negative stem. For the verb tehdä (to make), this stem is tee, resulting in emme tee.
