Questions & Answers about نوروز اول سال ایرانی است.
Why doesn't the Farsi sentence include the word for day?
The word avval means both first and beginning. The phrase avval-e sāl literally translates to the beginning of the year or the first of the year. Because of this, Farsi speakers don't need to add the word ruz (day) for the meaning to be perfectly clear.
How do you pronounce the phrase اول سال ایرانی and how do the words connect?
You pronounce it as avval-e sāl-e irāni. The words are connected by the ezāfe, which is a hidden short e sound that links words together. The first ezāfe acts like the English word of (first OF the year), and the second one links the noun year to its adjective Iranian.
Why does the word for Iranian come after the word for year in this sentence?
In Farsi, adjectives almost always follow the noun they describe. Instead of saying Iranian year like in English, you say year, add the ezāfe connection, and then add the adjective Iranian, resulting in sāl-e irāni.
Is اول an adjective or a noun here?
The word avval can act as both the ordinal number first (an adjective) and the word beginning (a noun). In this sentence, it is acting as a noun, which is why it can be followed by an ezāfe to mean the beginning of something.
