Questions & Answers about بهتر است که این کتاب را بخوانی.
Why does the verb بخوانی start with بـ (be-)?
This is the present subjunctive form. The phrase بهتر است که (it is better that) expresses a recommendation, which requires the subjunctive in Farsi. It is formed by adding the prefix بـ (be-) to the present stem خوان (khān), followed by the "you" ending ی (-i).
How do you pronounce بخوانی and why is there a و in it?
It is pronounced "bekhāni". The verb "to read" (خواندن) uses a special historical spelling where the letter و (vāv) is silent when it comes between خ (khe) and ا (alef). You will also see this "silent vāv" in other common Farsi words like "sister" (خواهر).
The English translation says "You had better", but where is the word for "you"?
Farsi often uses impersonal phrases for advice. بهتر است که literally translates to "It is better that...". The "you" comes entirely from the verb ending ی (-i) on بخوانی ("you read"). You don't need to add the word for "you" (تو) because the verb ending already makes it clear.
Why do we need the word را after این کتاب?
را (ra) is a grammar marker used for a specific direct object. Because the sentence tells you to read "this book" (این کتاب) rather than just "a book", we must use را to show it is the specific thing receiving the action of the verb.
