Questions & Answers about آیا صدای عروسکگردان را شنیدی که داشت روی سکو آواز میخواند؟
In English we say "hear the puppeteer singing," but Farsi uses که. How does this structure work?
With perception verbs like شنیدن (to hear) or دیدن (to see), Farsi doesn't use a gerund (like "singing"). Instead, it uses a full clause introduced by که. You name the object you perceived (صدای عروسکگردان را), add که, and then describe the ongoing action using the Past Continuous tense (داشت... آواز میخواند). It translates literally to: "Did you hear the puppeteer's voice, that he was singing?"
Why is the first verb شنیدی but the second part is داشت میخواند?
Because they have different subjects. The main verb شنیدی is in the 2nd person singular because the subject is "you" (Did you hear?). The dependent clause داشت میخواند (was singing) is in the 3rd person singular because its subject is the puppeteer, describing what he/she was doing when you heard them.
Why does it say صدای عروسکگردان را (the voice of the puppeteer) instead of just عروسکگردان را (the puppeteer)?
While you can say you heard a person, Farsi strongly prefers to specify that you heard the "voice" or "sound" (صدا) of the person or thing making the noise. It sounds much more natural to say "I heard the voice of the puppeteer" rather than "I heard the puppeteer."
The Past Continuous tense is داشت آواز میخواند, but it is split by روی سکو. Is this normal word order?
Yes, it is very common! In continuous tenses, the auxiliary verb (داشت) and the main verb (آواز میخواند) often act as bookends, wrapping around other elements like prepositional phrases or adverbs. You could also put روی سکو right after که, but putting it between the auxiliary and the main verb flows perfectly in Farsi.
