Learn Farsi: این فداکاری، مادر را به تحمل کردن تبعیض واداشت. - This sacrifice compelled the mother to endure discrimination.

The verb vâdâshtan (to compel or force) requires a specific structure. The person being compelled is the direct object, marked here by râ in mâdar râ. The action they are forced to do is introduced by the preposition be, which here attaches to the long infinitive tahammol kardan (to endure).

Could we use a subjunctive verb here instead of the long infinitive tahammol kardan?

Yes. While using be plus a long infinitive is very common in formal or written Farsi, you can also use a subjunctive clause. You could say mâdar râ vâdâsht ke tab'iz râ tahammol konad (compelled the mother so that she endures discrimination). Both structures are important to master at this level.

How is the word tab'iz (discrimination) grammatically linked to the infinitive tahammol kardan?

They are linked by an ezafe vowel sound, pronounced tahammol kardan-e tab'iz. When a long infinitive is followed immediately by its logical object, Farsi connects them with an ezafe. You can think of it like saying the enduring of discrimination in English.

What is the present stem of vâdâshtan, and how would this verb look in the present tense?

The present stem is vâdâr. If this sentence were in the present tense, the verb would be vâmidârad. Notice that the continuous prefix mi- gets wedged between the verbal prefix vâ- and the root.
