Why is the verb shodi (you became) used for 'caused'?
Farsi doesn't have a single simple verb for 'to cause'. Instead, it uses the compound verb bâ'es shodan, which literally means 'to become the cause'. Because the sentence is in the past tense for 'you', it uses shodi. You are literally saying 'You became the cause.'
Why does bâ'es have an Ezafe (the invisible 'e' sound) added to it?
The Ezafe is needed to link the noun bâ'es (cause) to the object it relates to, which is in ettefâq (this incident). It acts exactly like the English word 'of', giving us 'the cause of this incident'.
Why is in ettefâq (this incident) placed right in the middle of the compound verb bâ'es shodan?
It is very common in Farsi to split a compound verb to fit the object inside. The noun bâ'es comes first so it can connect to the object with an Ezafe. Then the object in ettefâq follows, and finally the conjugated helping verb shodi goes at the very end of the sentence, as verbs usually do in Farsi.
