Why does the sentence use khânde instead of the regular past tense khând?
This is an example of clause chaining, which is the focus of this lesson. Instead of using the word for 'and' to connect two past tense verbs, Farsi can turn the first verb into a past participle (khânde) and only conjugate the final verb (kard). It means exactly the same thing: 'read and signed'.
How do we know who did the reading and when it happened, if khânde isn't conjugated?
In a chained sentence, the participle (khânde) always borrows its subject and its tense from the final verb. Because the final verb is emzâ kard (he/she signed, simple past tense), we automatically know that the reading was also done by the manager in the past.
Is it wrong to just use the word for 'and' between two regular verbs here?
Not at all! Saying modir gozâresh râ khând va sanad râ emzâ kard is perfectly correct and very common in everyday speech. Using the participle khânde to chain the clauses together is simply a more elegant, formal style that you will frequently encounter in written Farsi and on the news.
Why do we see the object marker râ twice in such a short sentence?
Because there are two separate actions, each with its own specific direct object. Gozâresh râ marks the report as the specific thing being read, while sanad râ marks the document as the specific thing being signed. Since both objects are definite and specific, both need their own marker.
