From Lesson 252:Until (tâ, tâ inke)·Farsi

Questions & Answers about ما نمی‌توانیم بیرون برویم، مگر اینکه طوفان آرام بگیرد.

Why is بگیرد in the subjunctive form here?
The conjunction مگر اینکه (unless) introduces a condition that hasn't happened yet. Just like with تا اینکه (until) which you are learning in this lesson, it requires the Present Subjunctive to express an unrealized future event. Since the storm hasn't calmed down yet, we use بگیرد instead of the indicative می‌گیرد.
Can I use تا اینکه (until) instead of مگر اینکه (unless) in this sentence?
Yes! They act very similarly here. If you swapped مگر اینکه for تا اینکه, the sentence would mean 'We cannot go outside until the storm calms down.' The grammatical structure remains exactly the same because both conjunctions require the Present Subjunctive for unrealized future conditions.
Why is برویم (we go) also in the subjunctive form?
The first part of the sentence uses the verb نمی‌توانیم (we cannot). In Farsi, when you link a modal verb like 'can', 'want', or 'must' to a second verb, that second verb must take the Present Subjunctive form. So می‌رویم (we go) drops its می prefix and takes the subjunctive ب prefix to become برویم.
What is the infinitive of the verb for 'calms down' and how is it built?
The infinitive is the compound verb آرام گرفتن. It is made of the adjective آرام (calm, quiet, peaceful) and the verb گرفتن (to take or get). Literally, the phrase means the storm 'gets calm'.
