What are the singular forms of mokâtebât and ertebâtât, and why do they use the -ât suffix?
The singular forms are mokâtebeh (مکاتبه) and ertebât (ارتباط). Because these are abstract nouns borrowed from Arabic, they often take the Arabic plural suffix -ât in formal, business, or administrative contexts instead of the standard Persian plural -hâ. Notice that for words ending in the short vowel sound 'eh' like mokâtebeh, that final sound is dropped before adding -ât.
Since mokâtebât is technically plural, why is it translated as the singular English word 'correspondence'?
In English, 'correspondence' is an uncountable noun, so we rarely say 'correspondences'. In Farsi, however, using the Arabic plural -ât for abstract concepts is very common to express the collective entirety of the letters, emails, or messages being exchanged.
Why does the object marker appear only after ertebâtât and not after both nouns?
When you have a list of direct objects connected by 'and' (va), the marker is only needed once at the very end of the entire noun phrase. Placing it after ertebâtât applies it to both mokâtebât and ertebâtât together.
Why is the second verb shoru' konad (start) in the present subjunctive form?
The word here means 'so that' or 'in order to'. In Farsi, when is used to show purpose or intention, it requires the following verb to be in the subjunctive mood. That is why we use shoru' konad instead of the indicative shoru' mikonad.
