Questions & Answers about ما نمیتوانستیم اینجا بمانیم، زیرا مجبور شدیم که خانه را بفروشیم.
Why does the Farsi say مجبور شدیم (we became forced) instead of مجبور بودیم (we were forced)?
While both translate well to "we were forced" in English, they have slightly different focuses. مجبور شدیم uses the verb شدن (to become) and focuses on the specific event or moment the obligation hit them. مجبور بودیم uses بودن (to be) and describes an ongoing state of obligation in the past. Since having to sell the house was an action that resulted from a specific situation, شدیم feels very natural here.
The action happened in the past, so why is بفروشیم (sell) in the present subjunctive?
In Farsi, expressions of obligation like مجبور شدن (to be forced) are linked to the next verb using که (that) and the present subjunctive. This happens regardless of the tense of the main verb. Even though the forcing happened in the past (مجبور شدیم), the grammatical structure literally translates to "we became forced that we sell."
We see the present subjunctive again with بمانیم (stay). Does توانستن (to be able to) follow the same rule?
Yes! Just like expressions of obligation, verbs of ability like توانستن require the second verb to be in the present subjunctive. So even though نمیتوانستیم (we could not) is in the past tense, the action they couldn't do (بمانیم) stays in the present subjunctive.
Can I use چون instead of زیرا for "because"?
Absolutely. زیرا is a slightly more formal and literary word for "because." In everyday spoken Farsi, you will almost always hear چون or برای اینکه instead, and you can safely swap them in this sentence without changing the meaning.
