Questions & Answers about من چاقو و طناب را ندارم.
Why is را (râ) placed after "rope" instead of "knife"?
را marks the specific direct object of the sentence. Because "the knife and the rope" (چاقو و طناب) act together as a single connected object, you only need one را at the very end of the whole phrase to show that both items are specific.
I thought present tense verbs take نمی (nemi-) when negative. Why is it ندارم (nadâram) and not نمیدارم (nemidâram)?
The verb "to have" (داشتن - dâshtan) is a major exception in Farsi. It does not use the usual می (mi-) or نمی (nemi-) prefixes in the simple present tense. To make it negative, you just add the short prefix نـ (na-) directly to the stem, giving you ندارم (nadâram).
Since this lesson is about بدون (bedun-e, meaning "without"), how could I rewrite this to say "I am without the knife and the rope"?
You would use the preposition بدون (bedun-e) before the nouns and change the verb to "I am" (هستم - hastam). It would look like this: من بدون چاقو و طناب هستم (man bedun-e châghu va tanâb hastam). Notice that when using prepositions like بدون, you drop the specific object marker را.
Why is طناب (tanâb) spelled with ط instead of ت?
In modern Farsi, both ط and ت make the exact same "t" sound. طناب is a word with Arabic origins, so it keeps its original spelling using ط. For these words, you just have to memorize which "t" letter to use!
