Questions & Answers about آیا چون در مسابقه پیروز شدند خوشحال هستند؟
In English we say 'Are they happy because...', but here چون (because) comes before the happiness part. Why is the order flipped?
In Farsi, the چون (because) clause can easily be placed before the main clause, especially to emphasize the reason. The sentence literally flows as 'Is it that because in the match they became victorious, they are happy?' You could also flip it to match English perfectly: آیا خوشحال هستند چون در مسابقه پیروز شدند؟ Both are correct and natural!
Why is the past tense verb شدند (shodand), which means 'they became', used here for 'they won'?
The Farsi verb for 'to win' is a compound verb: پیروز شدن (pirooz shodan). پیروز means 'victorious' and شدن means 'to become'. So, to say 'they won' in Farsi, you literally say 'they became victorious' (پیروز شدند).
Why do we need در (dar - in) before مسابقه (mosabegheh - match)? In English we just say 'they won the match'.
Because the Farsi verb literally means 'to become victorious', it needs the preposition در (in) to connect to the event. You are saying they became victorious in the match (در مسابقه پیروز شدند).
One verb is past tense (پیروز شدند) and the other is present tense (هستند). Is it normal to mix tenses in sentences with چون?
