Questions & Answers about من یک برنامهی جدید ندارم.
I've learned that present tense verbs usually start with the prefix 'mi-'. Why is 'I do not have' nadâram and not nemidâram?
The verb 'to have' is a special exception in Farsi! In the present tense, it doesn't take the usual می (mi-) prefix. To make it negative, you simply attach the negative prefix ن (na-) directly to the affirmative verb دارم (dâram, 'I have') to create ندارم (nadâram).
Why is there an extra letter ی at the end of برنامهی (barname-ye)?
This is the ezâfe, a spoken connector used to link a noun to the adjective that describes it. The word برنامه (barname, 'plan') ends with a silent 'h' that makes an 'eh' sound. To bridge this vowel sound to the next word smoothly, Farsi adds a 'ye' sound, which is written as ی at the end of the noun.
Why are the words in the order برنامهی جدید (barname-ye jadid) instead of 'new plan'?
In Farsi, adjectives almost always come after the noun they describe. Instead of putting 'new' first, you state the noun 'plan' (برنامه), use the ezâfe connector to link them, and then add 'new' (جدید).
Do I have to include من (man, 'I') at the beginning of the sentence?
No, it is completely optional! The verb ندارم (nadâram) ends with the suffix ـم (-am), which already tells us the subject is 'I'. Dropping the pronoun من (man) and simply saying یک برنامهی جدید ندارم is very common and sounds perfectly natural.
